Soil Evaluation Testing, The First Step For Septic System OWTS Design in Rhode Island

Soil Evaluations are Step #1

The first step in designing a RI septic system, called an Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS), is to do Soil Evaluation testing on the property where you want to build. Some people still refer to Soil Evaluations as a “Perc Test”.

The Seasonal High Watertable and soil types are what a Soil Evaluation determines. These factors along with the total number of proposed bedrooms (for residential homes) determine the size of your proposed OWTS septic system and design elevations. Your choices for the types of OWTS septic systems can be limited by the Seasonal High Watertable and other site specific factors.

Soil Evaluations are done throughout the year and can be supplemented by Wet Season (early Winter to early Spring) readings. For individual lots proposing a new home construction the State of Rhode Island requires a $150 application fee and you’ll need to hire a backhoe operator to do the digging.

We provide 3 convenient and easy Soil Evaluation options:

  • Bronze Service – Includes base Soil Evaluation fee, but does not include application fee or backhoe services.
  • Silver Service – Includes base Soil Evaluation fee and application fee, but does not include backhoe services.
  • Gold Service – Make things easier for you, and worry free! Includes base Soil Evaluation fee, application fee and backhoe.
